A GUIDE

HOW TO SET YOUR MANTRA

mantra is a sanskrit word meaning a tool for the mind. in the buddhist and hindu wisdom traditions, it is a word-sound-vibration used to anchor attention during meditation. the most profound of these is OM, which encapsulate all of being within it.

in its modern iteration a mantra functions as a positive affirmation. it is a word or phrase chosen by yourself, to define how you would like to move forward in your life, with intention, towards constructive action.

follow the steps below to set your personal mantra, and use it cultivate focus during practice. a mantra may also be used to edit self-doubt and negativity in the moment, so you can keep moving forward.

THE 9 STEP METHOD

1. take a deep breath and then exhale slowly

you have taken the first step in finding words that will serve as your personal mantra. trust yourself and the process.

2. engage in a slow paced activity that you can get lost in

take a walk outside without headphones, perform a slow paced yoga practice or stretch. don't make the activity too strenuous. allow your mind to wander ... it will find its way.

3. when a word or phrase presents itself just observe it

write down the word or phrase without worry of its implication ... don't self edit.

4. repeat the process a few times and collect your "words"

allow yourself to live with your words for a few days and keep collecting and writing them down.

5. begin to formulate your mantra

using words or phrases that have resonated with you begin to craft your personal mantra word or statement in the present tense. If your words are "different" "honesty"and "strength" your mantra could be:

"honesty is my strength ... my voice is unique and powerful"

6. say your mantra out aloud

it may seem strange at first, but get in the habit of repeating your mantra a few times a day until it starts to roll off your tongue with ease. this marks the start of the process. fine tune it over the course of the next few days, so that it reflects you with honesty and accuracy. remember that this mantra is private and for your alone.

7. make your mantra part of your practice

repeat your mantra to intiate practice or when you light your mantra candle to signify your intent. It will help you focus and give you motivation.

8. notice when your mantra crops up in your thoughts

is it when you are ruminating or worrying? use your mantra to crowd out negative chatter and turn to more constructive thought patterns.

9. make use of your mantra frequently

the more you use your mantra, the more you will find it at hand to change the trajectory of your day. use your mantra when you feel overwhelmed or hopeless. find strength in your affirmation and push through difficult moments.
