how to sit in meditation

lotus pose

create a platform with two yoga blocks on their lowest side. place your grounding pillow on top with the indent facing the back and sit tall on the seat with your legs extended. lift your legs one at time to sit with them crossed and your feet supported on your inner thighs. soles of feet should be facing the ceiling while your lower your knees gently to the ground to create a comfortable supported position for a long meditative hold. place an arm on each thigh or knee and place hand palm facing up with thumb and forefinger touching in a traditional mudra of knowledge. breathe steadily as you deepen your calm. sit as long as you like.

hero pose

place a yoga block along its length on your yoga mat. get up on your knees and then sit onto the block with legs extending towards the back of the room straddling the block with soles of your feet facing the ceiling. if knees feel uncomfortable, tuck the grounding pillow under them. add the second block to create additional height for added comfort. sit back and breathe.

other poses

there is no right way to sit in meditation. lotus pose and hero pose are traditionally used in eastern wisdom traditions, but you can also sit comfortably upright with the support of a chair with your feet planted gently but firmly on the ground. hands may be placed on your knees or thighs with palms facing up or down. you can also do meditation lying down supporting yourself with your props and tools as needed for comfort.
